Supporting trainee teachers and work experience students
We work very closely with the University of Hertfordshire and offer up to five placements a year for trainee teachers. We support PGCE and BEd students through different placements in their learning journey. We also welcome back previous pupils for work experience and work closely with the St Albans School Partnership to enable their pupils to support in our school. We take advantage of the language, STEM, drama, computing, music, art and maths masterclass opportunities that this partnership affords us.
The national qualifications for school leadership
We believe in developing all our staff to their full potential. Several of our teachers and leadership team members have achieved a leadership qualification:
- Miss Mylotte – National Professional Qualification for Headship
- Mrs Morley – National Professional Qualification for Headship
- Mrs Digweed – National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership
- Miss Child – National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership
- Mrs Wicks – currently studying for the National Professional Qualification in Early Years
- Mrs Holmes -currently studying for the National Professional Qualification for Leading Behaviour and Culture.
Many members of our support staff team have achieved additional qualifications. Mrs Field is a qualified teacher and Mrs Pick has Higher Level Teaching Assistant status. Mrs Cresswell, Mrs Green, Mrs Hill, Mrs Patrick and Mrs Unsworth have all been awarded childcare linked NVQ3s.
Moderation Work
Mrs Morley works as a KS2 writing moderator. This involves her visiting different schools and discussing writing judgements with the teachers there. Her training is updated annually and this supports us in making sure that we are always evaluating our own writing curriculum.
Eco-Schools Bronze Award
Following our bronze award, we have continued to carry out work in this area including linking with a charity who built a chalk bank in Greenwood Park to support butterfly conservation. Infant children planted seeds and the Eco-Council planted them in the park.
Herts for Learning Wellbeing Quality Mark
We have achieved the HfL Wellbeing Quality Mark, which promotes health and wellbeing in the curriculum and within the school community.
School Games Mark Gold Award
The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.
Modeshift Stars Platinum Award
We have successfully achieved the Modeshift Stars platinum award for our work on sustainable travel initiatives. Mrs Wicks leads this work.
STARS Local Authority Primary School of the Year Award
We are delighted that Killigrew was awarded the STARS Local Authority Primary School of the Year Award in 2022 for our work on sustainable travel.
The Early Careers Framework for Early Career Teachers
Following on from our pilot of the Early Careers Framework in 2019-2020, we continue to support early career teachers in school. Mrs Morley is part of the senior accrediting body team and the steering group within the Alban Teaching School and she co-facilitates the training for mentors and early career teachers in the local area.
Our published work – Great Expectations
We were part of a year long Hertfordshire project that aimed to encapsulate the features of great schools – those schools with a history of strong and sustained progress for disadvantaged children. Following this work, we had a case study published in a book called Great Expectations. Our case study focussed on ‘Raising disadvantaged children’s attainment through immersive feedback.’
