Killigrew Primary and Nursery School Context Statement
Killigrew Primary School is a welcoming and inclusive two‑form‑entry school situated in Chiswell Green, St Albans. Our community is richly diverse, with pupils representing a wide range of faiths, cultural backgrounds and beliefs, and some of our children speaking English as an additional language. This diversity enhances the cultural capital and lived experiences brought into the school each day.
Killigrew’s extensive grounds are one of its greatest strengths, offering abundant space for sports, play, and bringing learning to life. The wide, open areas allow children to be active, curious, and deeply engaged in their learning outdoors. The school also borders leafy Greenwood Park, which further enriches this experience, providing opportunities for local studies, nature exploration, and hands‑on learning that extend beyond the classroom.
Killigrew maintains a calm and nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued and ready to learn. Our unique setting strengthens our commitment to teaching valuable life skills, including road safety, which is essential for safely navigating the major road networks, dual carriageways and busy routes in close proximity to the school. This ensures pupils gain the confidence and awareness needed to manage their community safely.
We serve a community with a high proportion of dual‑working parents, and our commitment to strong communication and supportive relationships ensures that families feel connected and well‑informed. We work closely with all our families, to support strong attendance.
Our pupils benefit from a wide range of cultural experiences, both within school and through the diverse backgrounds of our families. This contributes to high aspirations and positive academic outcomes. The majority of our pupils achieve above national averages, and all are supported to reach their full potential—academically, socially and emotionally.
Inclusion and Support
At Killigrew, inclusion is central to our ethos. We hold a strong belief that every child can thrive, regardless of their starting point or the barriers they may face. What that looks like in practise. We work successfully with a wide range of external agencies to ensure that pupils with SEND and those with emotional or social vulnerabilities receive timely, effective and well‑coordinated support.
Our staff team embodies a culture of openness, collaboration and professional curiosity. Colleagues support one another, keep their doors open, and embrace a shared commitment to doing the very best for every child. Our practice is driven by care, consistency and the principles of “collaborative professional practice”, supported by healthy professional ambition and challenge that helps us continually improve.
Killigrew is proud to be a warm, ambitious and inclusive school where children are valued as individuals, where diversity is celebrated, and where every pupil is supported to learn, grow and flourish.
